Last week we found out that in 1921 The American Legion’s efforts resulted in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau which was the forerunner of the Veterans Administration (VA) of today. Additionally, we learned about the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs (ODVA) which acts as a liaison between the veteran and the VA in addition to providing resources and services to Oklahoma veterans.

Newcastle Police Department was seeking help from the public on Monday to identify a male suspected of stealing an ATV from a Newcastle residence.

Newcastle High School FFA members have been busy competing at the Oklahoma State Fair and several have placed. Results as of Monday were the following: Kreas Richard - first place Simmental Heifer, Reserve Champion Beef Showman, Grand Champion Beef Showman, Grand Champion Bred and Owned Simmental Heifer, and first place Commercial Heifer; Molly Sheriff - first place and Reserve Champion Division 3 Market Goat; Kaitlyn Morgan - second place Market Goat, Goat Showmanship Finalist, fourth place Hamp Wether Lamb, and fourth place Cross Wether Lamb; Chloe Sheriff - fourth place Market Goat; and Jacy Cook - fifth place Cross Market Lamb.

Fees approved are lower than those projected by NewGen in system and rate analysis

Paulla Bowden, Child Nutrition Program manager, was honored at the September Newcastle Public Schools Board of Education meeting. She obtained a $20,000 grant from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry. Bowden said the grant will be used to purchase locally sourced, minimally processed foods such as ground beef and beef patties. She said, “It’s a wonderful resource for schools and farmers alike.”

A burn ban was declared for McClain County by County Commissioners on Tuesday, September 5. The ban continues for up to 14 days, at which time the commissioners will reconsider.

A State of the State luncheon was recently held by the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce with guest speakers State Senator Jessica Garvin, R-Duncan, and Oklahoma Energy Resources Board Executive Director Mindy Stitt.

Taylor Boulay of Newcastle has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Summer 2023 Dean’s List. The summer terms run from May to August.
