There is a correction from last week’s Part4whereIstatedthatMarionAlonzo Holden was buried at our Blanchard Cemetery. Alonzo went down with his ship that was sunk by the Japanese at Guadalcanal in 1942. Only his gravestone is in the Blanchard Cemetery. It is a marble bench located near his family’s graves.

The American Legion – Part 3
The Blanchard American Legion was named Bond-Holden Post after two young men who died in defense of their country. One was James Nathaniel Bond, who died October 25, 1918, near Toul, France, while serving his country in World War I. The other is Marion A Holden, who died September 5, 1942, in the battle of Guadalcanal in World War II.

Veterans Park pavilion tentatively funded
A 50/50 matching grant for $1,250,000 from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant and administered by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation received tentative approval for the building of a pavilion, restrooms and other amenities. The pavilion is planned to be located on Garrett Drive by N.W. 16th Street.
