The undefeated Poteau Pirates (12-0) remained that way after defeating Newcastle (9-3) in the OSSAA Class 4A State Quarter Finals.

The Racers made the long trip to eastern Oklahoma to face Poteau on Friday night, losing the game 28-18.

Newcastle came out strong scoring two touchdowns in the first period to lead Poteau, 12-7. The Pirates were able to keep Newcastle scoreless in the second and third quarters, while scoring a touchdown in both quarters to take the lead for good. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 21-12. Both teams added a fourth quarter touchdown to make the game-ending score of 28-18.

Newcastle’s season concludes, but Poteau continues on with a trip to the Tri City area to play Blanchard (11-1) on Friday in the State Semi-Finals. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Ada-Wagoner game, also scheduled for Friday.

Racer Head Coach Jeff Brickman released a letter of appreciation to the community over the weekend.

He states, “Congratulations on a great season! The dedication and hard work exhibited by our players resulted in a 9-3 record and playing in the State Quarter Finals. Your commitment to excellence has not only brought success on the field, but has also created lasting memories and camaraderie within our team.”

Brickman said the team will have a meeting on Monday after the Thanksgiving break, and at that time will award players of the game for the Poteau- Newcastle playoff game. Players will also be checking in their equipment and hear about the team’s off-season weights program.

“Thank you again for your dedication, support, and for being an integral part of this incredible journey,” Brickman states. “Wishing you a joyful Thanksgiving and looking forward to the exciting events that will close out this memorable season.”

The Racer Football Team banquet will be on December 13.
