Rena Geneva Robertson
Rena Geneva Robertson
Rena was born on September 7, 1930, in Hedley, Texas. She was the third of eight children born to Everett Frank Capps and Martha Julian Standridge Capps. When she was young, Rena remembers her family living in a dugout home. Growing up as a share cropper’s child, she and her siblings worked hard in the cotton fields.
They milked cows and did numerous other farm chores. At the age of 17 she married the love of her life, Joe Darold Robertson.
They were married on July 9, 1948 in Denison, Texas. Throughout her life Rena took on the role of wife, mother and homemaker, raising four children. In her earlier years of raising children, she and the kids traveled with Darold all over the country, while he raced Greyhounds.
It was in 1965, when they settled down and bought 80 acres south of Newcastle. This was where they remained living until today.
Rena was an excellent homemaker, cook, seamstress and gardener. However, her passion in life, believe it or not, was “fishing.” She loved spending as much time as she could at the pond fishing for anything that would bite. Her favorite fish were black bass, crappie and catfish.
Rena didn’t get her driver license until she was 47 years old. After that she was always on the go. She enjoyed spending time with friends and traveling with her best friend, Juanita Griffith. Her love and passion were being with her family, her greatest joy was having her children over for a huge gathering. In fact, she loved it so much that for over 20 years all of the children would meet at San Marcos and have Sunday dinner.
She was a long-time member of the Newcastle First Baptist Church but had never been baptized until last year at the age of 93.
On September 1, 2024, she became the oldest member to be baptized at Newcastle First Baptist.
She was preceded in death by: Her parents, Everett and Martha Julian Capps; husband Darold Robertson in 2017; her son, Jerry Don Robertson, who passed at birth; three sisters, Viola Hammons, Buelah Capps and Mary Helen Barquin; and one brother, Noble Capps.
