NPD Sergeant pulls man form burning car

Newcastle police Sergeant Ricky Ambrose has been hailed as a hero for pulling a man from a burning car.

On the early morning of Aug. 29, Ambrose was parked near the 700 block of US Highway 62 when he observed a vehicle traveling southbound cross over the center lane and strike the front of another vehicle traveling northbound.

According to a memorandum released by Newcastle Police Department Chief Gary Norman, Ambrose observed one of the vehicles burst into flames and immediately called dispatch for emergency assistance.

Ambrose, along with a citizen approached the burning car and noticed the driver appeared to be unconscious and bleeding from his head.

After an attempt to gain access to the vehicle through the driver side door was unsuccessful, they were able to pull the driver out through the back door moments before the vehicle burst into flames.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
