A Regional Tournament victory means the Newcastle Racers host an Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Super Regional Tournamenttoday(Thursday) and will play at 3 and 5 p.m.
The Racers were in the Regional tournament brackets with Clinton and Sulphur on September27-28.Sulphurbeat Clinton, and then Newcastle beat Sulphur, 13-3, placing the Racers in the title game. Sulphur beat Clinton a second time, and then Newcastle beat Sulphur a second time, this time 10-0, to take the Regional title.
Facing a little adversity just before the Regional games, the Racers took their second and third losses of the season. One was to the Elgin Owls, 4-3, and then one Monday night 9-3 to the Dale Lady Pirates (#1 in Class 2A). Newcastle’s season record is now 29-3.
Newcastle will face the Wagoner Bulldogs for the best of three games at the Super Regional.
Wagoner, ranked number 14 by the OSSAA, has a 21-10 season record. Newcastle is ranked number three.
Coach Mike Crossley said their record is decieving. He said they have the number one pitcher in the state for strikeouts. She averages 13 per game.
Crossley said, “We’ll make some adjustments at the plate, and hopefully put the ball into play.”
He said the Racers are a good ball club and they will put some pressure on Wagoner.
The winner goes to the State Tournament October 1314, and the losing team’s season is over.
