Newcastle’s Racers came off a great week of practice headed into Friday night’s football game with Tecumseh, and it showed.
The Racers held their opponents scoreless in the first three quarters, while scoring 14, 21 and 13 points consecutively. The defense did allow one touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Tecumseh missed its extra point. The final score was Newcastle 55 to Tecumseh’s 6. The win moved the Racers to 4-0 on the season, and 1-0 in District.
Head Coach Jeff Brickman said Tecumseh played man coverage and the Racers had several big pass plays that took advantage of that.
He said Jackson Bergt threw an 83-yard pass to Aden Shumard and Jackson Schanuel threw a 63-yard pass to Jalen Lane.
The Racers held Tecumseh to under 100 yards and only the 6 points, while Newcastle threw for more than 300 yards and rushed for more than 200 yards, while scoring the 55 points.
Several individual players were recognized for their performance. Jordan Lane was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Jordan Provens-Thomas had 6 pancakes. TJ Bradford had the best tackle. Rex Heskew had the best effort on offense with a 94% grade, and Schanuel had the best effort on defense, with a 90.2% grade. Toby Batchelder was recognized for his Special Teams play, going 7 of 7 on point-after attempts, and notching five touchbacks on the kickoffs. Alec Shumard was named Practice Player of the Week.
Newcastle prepares this week for the Blanchard Lions, who are coming off a victory against Tuttle. Brickman said Blanchard has some great players and they play hard. He said the Racers will need a great week of practice.
