Racers 21-1, to host Regionals

The Racers’ fast-pitch softball team continued its streak this week with wins against several teams. On Tuesday, they had a 21-1 record on the year and a district-leading 9-0 record.

Newcastle beat Byng last Friday in one of their closest games this year, 11-10. They followed that with a Tuesday game against Harrah, which resulted in a 13-0 victory, and then a 10-0 win against Blanchard, and a 9-0 win against the Washington Warriors. On Monday, the Racers beat Bishop McGuinness, 133.

The Racers will host the Regional Tournament next week. Games will probably be on Wednesday and times will be announced. Possible teams, according to Coach Mike Crossley, include Newcastle, Clinton and Sulphur.

Senior pitcher Aubree Ferguson threw all the games this last week and did a good job, Crossley said. The coach said he is proud of all of the Racer players.

“We are playing pretty well,” Crossley said. “In the end we are going to be a dangerous ball club, but there are some awfully good ball teams out there. It will get rough here in another week or so, come playoff time.”

Crossley said the Racers have done a good job this year playing all-round good softball.

“We have pitched well, swung the bats well,” he said. “It’s a solid ball club. I’ve been proud of how we have played.”

Crossley said the Racers have good senior leadership, and the rest of the team are juniors.

“We have a lot of girls who have played a lot of ball. They are pretty well seasoned,” Crossley said. “When you have that, you stand a chance of having a good season.”

Newcastle continues action this week with a game against McLoud on Wednesday. It was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was cancelled due to rain.

They play Classen SAS today (Thursday) at home, and then play against Lindsay at home on Monday. Crossley said Monday night will be Little League night.

On Tuesday the Racers play Elgin at home and the theme is “Bring a Buddy Night.” Crossley said this game is in honor of Buddy Eischen, a supporter of the softball program.

Crossley said, “He has made donations to the team, and helps out around the field. He has been a great friend of Newcastle fast-pitch. We honor him.”
