Newcastle took its first loss of the 2023 season in a tournament game against Dale. The Lady Pirates looted three runs from the Racers while managing to hold Newcastle scoreless.
But that’s not the big news. More importantly, the Racers won three other games at the Dale-Tecumseh Tournament.
The Racers had already won a game against North Rock Creek, 2-1, and then notched two more wins. The first came against the Prague Red Devils, 7-4, and the second came in a close game against the Byng Pirates, 11-10.
Coach Mike Crossley said the Racers went 3-1 at the tourney, beating North Rock Creek, and then taking the loss to Dale, who won the tournament.
Crossley said, “They are a good ball team. We’ll face them again later this season.”
The coach said on Friday, the Racers didn’t have their ace pitcher Aubree Ferguson, who was at an uncle’s wedding, but junior Jacie Brooks stepped in and did a good job.
“We beat Prague 7-4, and then we played Byng, and were down 10-6, before we got seven straight hits with two outs in the last inning to come back and beat them,” Crossley said.
