Douglass was the eventual winner of the Newcastle Otho Sweetpea Curtis Tournament, held over the weekend. The Class 4A number-four team beat the Racers in the Championship game, giving Newcastle its second loss on the year.
The Racers beat the Oklahoma City Storm on Thursday, and then Class 5A number nine Piedmont on Friday to set up the Saturday night game with Douglass.
Newcastle versus Oklahoma City Storm The Racers opened up play at the Sweetpea Tournament Thursday with a big win over the Oklahoma City Storm, 5935.
On offense, Newcastle popped 18 first period points, 14 second period, and 21 third period points, while only allowing a total of 11 Storm points in all three periods. With the game wrapped up, Newcastle was able to give some of the other players floor time.
“We were up 51-11 at the end of the third. It was a great defensive effort,” Head Coach Jessie Brown said. “We played reserves the entire 4th quarter.”
Nathan Ashley, a 6’5” junior, led Racer scoring with 17 points. Three of those were from three-point range. Carl’Sheon Young hit 16 points for the Racers, and Chase Sucharda had eight points.
Defensively, Newcastle held the Storm to only two points in the first period, 7 points in the second, and two points in the third.
Newcastle versus Piedmont
The Racers played Piedmont in the second round. Before the game, Head Coach Jessie Brown said the Racers will need to be disciplined defensively and play at a high level.
“We’ll need to stay the course and do what we do,” he said.
They apparently hit their goals as the Racers had a 70-58 win over the Class 5A, number 10-ranked team.
Newcastle versus Douglass
In the Championship game Saturday, Newcastle squared off against the Frederick A. Douglass High School Trojans, but the Racers eventually took the loss, 79-76.
Out of three tournaments this year, the Racers have had two first-place finishes, and one second-place.
Newcastle versus Tuttle
Earlier in the week, the Racers played Tuttle to a tie ball game at the end of the fourth, before winning the game in overtime by a 10-point margin, 61-51.
