Police officers conducted a traffic stop on July 12 in the 2800 block of U.S. Interstate 44 in Newcastle, resulting in the apprehension of two individuals they believe are involved in drug trafficking.

The suspects have been identified as Christopher Rodriguez, 48, whose last known address is unknown, and Precious Martinez, 27, of 1720 NW Liberty in Lawton.

While on patrol, officers Braden Jones and Jared Slentz observed a silver Nissan Pathfinder, towing a U-Haul trailer, making an improper right turn. At that time they initiated a traffic stop for the traffic violation.

Upon contacting the driver, officers detected a strong odor associated with marijuana emanating from the vehicle through the open driver’s side window. The driver of the vehicle, Martinez, revealed that she was heading back home to Lawton. Furthermore, Martinez admitted to officers the presence of marijuana in the vehicle.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the seizure of what officers described as a “staggering” 688 pounds of marijuana, which was concealed in 37 large trash bags.

“This significant discovery represents a major blow to drug trafficking in our community,” said Newcastle Police Chief Gary Norman. “The Newcastle Police Department commends the officers involved in this operation for their diligent work in disrupting the illegal drug trade.”

Both Rodriguez and Martinez have been taken into custody and are facing charges related to trafficking marijuana in McClain County.

The police department would like to remind the public that community safety is a shared responsibility.

“We encourage residents to report any information related to criminal activity to 405-3875525 or submit an anonymous tip through the City of Newcastle website at newcastleok. gov,” Norman said. “Your cooperation plays a vital role in maintaining the well-being of our community.”

Newcastle police department states that this report contains preliminary information about this police operation.
