Eating competition Aug. 5 because of Wynne, Wilson

A desire for certain types of food has led a Newcastle resident to plan an eating competition fundraiser.

A desire for certain types of food has led a Newcastle resident to plan an eating competition fundraiser.

Lisa Smith-Longman has been holding Indian Taco fundraisers the past few years to help pay for her son Taj Smith’s summer baseball expenses. She had one recently at the local Methodist church.

Now, because of longtime Newcastle resident James Wynne and Newcastle football coach Judd Wilson, Smith-Longman has planned an Indian Taco and meat pie contest.

Smith-Longman said Wynne suggested to her that if she would hold an Indian Taco eating contest, he would enter. After sharing that information, Coach Wilson said she needed to have a meat pie eating contest, because he would enter that.

Smith-Longman said, “Well here is their chance.”

At noon on Saturday, August 5 at the Newcastle United Methodist Church, 131 E. Fox Lane, an Indian Taco eating contest will be held. Immediately following, a meat pie eating contest will be held. The cost to enter is $20.

Smith-Longman said, “Contestants must clean their plate for it to count.”

Athletes, coaches, students and members of the community are invited to participate; however, the number of entries will be limited to 10 per event.

Both Indian Tacos and meat pies will also be available for sale to the attendees after the competition. Smith-Longman said you can contact her at 405-609-9929 if you have questions or need more information.

Indian Tacos are frybread with beans, meat, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. They can include onions, sour cream and jalapeƱos.

Meat pies are similar to an empanada, according to Smith-Longman, but better, she said laughingly. They include approximately one cup of seasoned hamburger, potatoes and cheese.

All proceeds made from the event will go to Taj’s 2024 summer baseball expenses.
