Kristanna Phillips of Newcastle is a 2023 graduate of Newcastle High School, but “she also is already an accomplished painter with numerous stunning canvases under her belt.”

The latter part of that is how she was described for an art exhibition held Sunday, July 9 at Resonator Institute in Norman.

An invitation to the event states, “If you’re out and about, come say hi to this prolific young talent and have a look at several of her recent works.” While that may have been the case on Sunday, she has now sold many of those which were on display.

The Resonator Institute was opened up for Phillips by its owner, Curtis Jones, the curator and print making professor at Oklahoma University. Resonator is a place to connect art communities and promote expression.

Phillips, the daughter of Marcus and Charlene Phillips, is a visual artist who does mostly acrylic paintings, but she also dabbles in other mediums, according to her social media.

Her art teacher, Lauren Dansby, said Phillips has just taken Art 3 at NHS last year. It was the first time Newcastle Public Schools offered the class, which is focused on sustained investigation where the artist chooses a topic of interest, performs research and creates art, according to Dansby. Phillips’ topic was mental health.

“Phillips created 15 pieces over the course of the year and did  a fantastic job,” Dansby said.

She added that a majority of that work was shown at Resonator, but that Phillips still has other works.

For those interested, Phillips’ work can be seen at her page on Facebook by going to Art by Kristanna Phillips. Curtis Jones’ work can be found at curtisjones.com.

This was Phillips’ first exhibition, but she will continue in her work. Her plans include pursuing her passion and love of horses, and developing her painting practice in her home studio.
