The City of Newcastle is looking to create stronger relationships between neighborhoods and local law enforcement by holding a Newcastle National Night Out.

The event will have local “heroes” of the community, as well as the first ever “Touch-a-Truck” event.

A community spokesperson said, “We’re hosting the First Annual Newcastle National Night Out – Touch-ATruck event from 7-9 p.m. on August 1, 2023, at Veterans Park. This family-friendly, interactive evening promises an exciting blend of public safety education, community engagement, and a unique hands-on experience with a variety of service vehicles.

“Our aim is to increase crime prevention awareness, encourage participation in local anti-crime programs, and send a message that our neighborhoods are united and proactive. This year, with the introduction of the ‘Touch-A-Truck’ event, we are expanding our commitment to community engagement and education.”

Local residents, especially family with children, are invited to meet the local community “heroes,” including firefighters, police officers, emergency responders, and construction workers.

For those who enjoy large commercial vehicles, the event provides an exclusive opportunity to explore a wide array of vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, bucket trucks, waste trucks, and tow trucks.

There will be a school bus on site, as well.

“We’re thrilled to announce our ‘Fill the Bus’ school supplies drive as part of the event,” the spokesperson said. “You can make a difference in the education of our community’s children with your generous donations. We invite everyone attending the event and all local businesses to contribute.”

All donations will directly support Newcastle Public Schools as they prepare for the new school year commencing August 8.

Food vendors will also be part of the celebration.

The City spokesperson said, “We’re excited to enjoy the scrumptious offerings from our food vendors, see the wonder on children’s faces as they explore the vehicles brought by our Touch-a-Truck participants, and witness the generosity of our community during the ‘Fill the Bus’ school supply drive.”
