Several Newcastle street projects were approved by the City Council during their June meeting. To be scheduled relatively quick, according to City Manager Kevin Self, are chip and seal projects on N.W. 16th Street and N.W. 24th Street.

Mayor Karl Nail said the City will need to post something to social media as these projects begin so local residents will know what they are doing.

Council members approved paint striping for approximately 23 miles of city streets at a cost of $98,000.

They approved asphalt resurfacing for a portion of S.E. 22nd Street. Self said the roadway is not holding up and needs an asphalt overlay.

Santa Fe Avenue between State Highway 9 and 37th Street was approved for asphalt resurfacing. Self said the roadway has some dips running through it and there also is some undermining of the roadway due to flooding, and it needs resurfaced.

Repair of damage on Stonebrook Drive was also approved. The City will resurface the asphalt where big trucks were coming through when they were rebuilding the bridge on 40th Street, and they tore up the roadway.

Council also approved rebuilding a bridge on Walker Drive. Self said the cost of this project is between $455,000 to $460,000.

The City Manager said this is not a complete list of projects and they are subject to change. He said the City still has the Ridge, where engineering is underway, and the City is currently seeking bids on Eunice Avenue. Council member Gene Reid added that the City needs to look at a pot hole by the oil well on Rockwell.
