Three wins in a row at the District Tournament gave the Newcastle Racers slow-pitch softball team the title and a trip to the Regional Tournament.
That’s as far as they would go, however, as the Racers lost two games at Regionals, the first to #3-ranked Tecumseh, 16-4, and the second to #8-ranked Bristow, 10-7. The Racers won the District Championship the weekend before by defeating Cushing, 7-6 and 7-1, and Harrah, 12-0.
Coach Ashley Filer said the girls really started putting the pieces together the last several games of the season.
“We had Lexie Lovelace in District hit a grand slam against Cushing. That was a big moment and changer for us,” she said.
The Racers had a total of seven home runs at the District Tournament.
“We didn’t finish like we wanted to but we did finish on a positive note,” she said, concerning the Regional Tournament.
“Tecumseh is very good. They had nine home runs in about four innings,” Filer said.
Against Bristow, the Racers were ahead but then they walked three batters and a Bristow girl hit a grand slam.
Filer said, “Overall they had a couple more hits than we did.” Looking ahead for the Racers, Filer said the team is in good shape “We are in the same position as we were with the fast pitch team,” she said. “We aren’t losing anyone. They all return.”
Filer said the Racers feel like they have some unfinished business to handle next season.
She said, “We are so excited to have everyone come back next year and be even better.”
