Research when choosing contractors

It’s been a blur since the tornado struck our district. I want to thank all of the first responders, law enforcement officers, utility workers, local, state, and federal officials and workers, along with the many volunteers who have worked around the clock to help our neighbors in McClain County as they work to put their lives back together.

OKLAHOMA STATE SENATE / From the desk of Sen. Jessica Garvin

It’s been a blur since the tornado struck our district. I want to thank all of the first responders, law enforcement officers, utility workers, local, state, and federal officials and workers, along with the many volunteers who have worked around the clock to help our neighbors in McClain County as they work to put their lives back together.

Our hearts continue to be with those families who lost loved ones. We pray for strength and healing during this difficult time. So many have suffered tremendous losses whether loved ones, their homes, businesses, or cherished belongings. Please know that you all have so many people lifting you up in prayer and ready to help however possible.

I’ve been so touched by the outpouring of support, generosity, and kindness.

Unfortunately, there are some who would use this disaster to scam innocent people out of their hard-earned money. Be on the lookout for fraudulent contractors, like fly-by-night roofers and carpenters who go door to door following disasters, and please help warn your elderly neighbors about these shady repair companies. Many will demand money up front and simply disappear after being paid or do poor or incomplete work and leave the property owner high and dry.

Always be sure to take your time when choosing contractors. Research individuals or companies online, ask friends for a list of reliable contractors, or look for local established companies in your community before agreeing to any work or signing a contract.

You should get written estimates from multiple companies to get a feel for the average costs of particular products and services.

Workers also should never request a substantial payment up front — this is a sure sign of a scam. Companies should provide a list of their services and the costs upfront for you to review, but payment should only be partially requested at specific stages of job completion or at the end. And the greatest advice is the old saying, “If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

McClain County is also one of five counties in which the Emergency Price Stabilization Act is in effect, meaning an increase of 10% or more is strictly prohibited for the prices of goods and services. This includes everything from a bottle of water to gas to construction materials and repairs. If you hear of or witness any such illegal activities, please report it immediately by calling toll free 1-833-681-1895 or emailing ConsumerProtection@ oag.ok.gov. You can find more useful tips and download the consumer complain form at https://www.oag.ok.gov/consumer-protection-unit. McClain County has also been approved for FEMA assistance for individuals and businesses. This assistance can help with housing repairs, temporary housing, replace damaged property, or disaster expenses not covered by other programs. It also is available for U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest loans for individuals and businesses impacted by the storms. You can apply by calling 1-800-621FEMA (3362) or visiting www.disasterassistance.gov.

Again, if you have any elderly or disabled neighbors, please reach out to them to see if they need help filing for this disaster assistance.
