Racers are Tony Gwinn Wood Bat Tournament Champions

Newcastle hosted and then won the Tony Gwinn Memorial Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend.

The Racers had wins against Christian Heritage, Santa Fe South and Purcell to win the Championship. Racer catcher James Folsom was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, and Tyler Frazier, Kaden Longman and Jackson Schanuel were named to the All-Tournament team.

Racers fall to Tuttle after fifth inning score

The Newcastle Racers lost the lead late in a 3-1 defeat to the Tuttle Tigers on Tuesday. Tuttle was down 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Alex Conover homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

Pitching was strong on both sides with Tuttle pitchers striking out 12, and Newcastle sitting down 10.

Conover took the win for Tuttle. The pitcher allowed three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out 11. Grayson Barnes threw twothirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Logan Wade toed the rubber for Newcastle, allowing four hits and three runs over five innings, and striking out eight. Jackson Schanuel threw two innings in relief.

Schanuel, Tyler Frazier, and Landon Eastep all had one hit to lead the Racers.

Racers win over Christian Heritage

The Racers were victorious over the Christian Heritage Crusaders, 4-2. Newcastle got things moving in the first inning, when an error scored one run.

Trey Crossley earned the win for the Racers, lasting seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out 11 and walking zero.

Joel Schuermann took the loss for Christian Heritage. He went six innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out one and walking one.

Taj Smith, Alex Logan, Frazier, and Kaden Longman each managed one hit to lead Newcastle.

Big second inning propels Racers over Santa Fe South Eight runs in the second inning led Newcastle past the Santa Fe South Saints, 10-1, on Friday. Frazier, James Folsom, Schanuel, Smith, Wade, and Lane Seaton each drove in runs during the inning.

Santa Fe South opened up scoring in the first inning. Albert Gallegos drove in one with a triple.

The Racers pulled away for good, however, with eight runs in the second inning. An error scored one run, Folsom drew a walk, scoring one run, Schanuel drew a walk, scoring one run, Smith drew a walk, scoring one run, Wade drew a walk, scoring one run, Seaton singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run, and Randy Nix drew a walk, scoring one run.

Schanuel was the winning pitcher for Newcastle, allowing one hit and one run over four innings, striking out eight and walking one. Jeffrey Sargent threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Seaton, Longman, Jackson Robertson, and Bryson Furnish all had one hit to lead the Racers.

Newcastle beats Purcell Dragons

The Racers were victorious over the Purcell Dragons, 8-4, as they fired up the offense in the first inning, when Seaton drew a walk, scoring one run.

Robertson led the the Racers to victory on the hill. The fireballer surrendered two runs on two hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three.

Parker Page took the loss for Purcell. Page surrendered five runs on eight hits over four innings, striking out four.

Frazier started the game for Newcastle surrendering two runs on one hit over two and a third innings, and striking out two The Racers racked up 11 hits in the game. Frazier, Logan and Folsom each had multiple hits for Newcastle Varsity Racers. Frazier led the Racers with three hits in five at bats.

The Racers had two games with the John Marshall Bears early this week and they take part in the Purcell Tournament starting today (Thursday).
