City marking water lines to update mapping

City Manager Kevin Self said city residents may see city employees and contractors marking lines in the community, but not to be concerned. They will be marking water and wastewater lines in order to update the city’s mapping.

Self said, “In January of this year, the city council approved an agreement with Civil Environmental Consulting (CEC) to conduct a water and wastewater modeling study throughout Newcastle.

“Once completed, the information obtained from the modeling study will be used to formulate a water and wastewater plan indicating present needs, and to guide future infrastructure development as the community continues to grow.

He said over the course of the next several months, residents may notice paint markings and blue flags in their yards as crews will be locating water/wastewater lines. GPS coordinates will also be obtained on all water/ wastewater lines, valves, manholes, and fire hydrants to create an overlay on the city’s mapping system.

“Flags will be retrieved after locating and GPS coordinates are completed,” Self said.

Water department crews and CEC personnel will need access to the backyards of some residents to locate lines, but they will make every attempt to notify residents and request access prior to entering the property.

Self said, “This is an important step in Newcastle’s future development. We are excited to have this project underway! Thank you for your support and cooperation.”
