Racers win against Bethany, Harding Prep, before taking loss to Tuttle

Newcastle’s season stands at 12 wins and only three losses.

Racers fifth-inning leads to win over Bethany Newcastle’s Racers nabbed the lead late in the game in a 10-9 victory over the Bethany Bronchos on Monday, March 27. Bethany trailed 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning when an error scored two runs for the Bronchos. It would not be enough.

There was plenty of action on the base paths as Newcastle collected eight hits and Bethany had 10.

The Bronchos got on the board in the first inning on a run when Cale Wetwiska tripled. Newcastle knotted the game up at nine in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alex Logan drew a walk, scoring one run.

Tyler Frazier was credited with the victory for the Racers. The bulldog allowed zero hits and zero runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking zero. Josh Langford and Jackson Schanuel entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Wetwiska took the loss for Bethany, lasting one and onethird innings, allowing two hits and one run, while striking out two.

Trey Crossley started the game for Newcastle, lasting two-thirds of an inning, allowing four hits and three runs, while walking zero. Charlie Tolle started the game for Bethany, lasting three innings, allowing three hits and four runs, while striking out three.

Lane Seaton, Schanuel, and James Folsom each racked up two hits for the Racers.

Racers have no-hitter as team beats Harding Prep Newcastle Varsity Racers’s two pitchers didn’t allow a single hit March 28 as the Racers defeated Harding Prep, 10-0. Alex Logan induced a fly out to get the last out of the game.

The Racers opened up scoring in the first inning, when Taj Smith hit into a fielder’s choice, and one run scored. The Racers scored five runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught by Newcastle was led by Jeffrey Sargent, Frazier, Folsom, and Schanuel, all knocking in runs in the inning. Sargent got the win for Newcastle, allowing zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out eight, and walking one. Logan threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Folsom and Schanuel each collected two hits to lead the Racers. Newcastle stole eight bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Sargent led the way with three.

Racers shut out Harding Prep

The Racers defeated Harding Prep again on March 28, this time 14-0, as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Connor Leader struck out Hunter Griswold to finish off the game.

In the first inning, the Racers’ offense revved up when Longman singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. The Racers tallied five runs in the second inning. Schanuel, Langford, Blake Walker, Frazier, and Folsom each drove in runs during the inning.

One bright spot for Harding Prep was a single by Sean Carr in the third inning.

Frazier took the win for Newcastle, lasting two innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs, while striking out five and walking one. Jackson Robertson and Leader helped to close out the game in relief.

Zach Sisson was on the pitcher’s mound for Harding Prep, allowing one hit and four runs over one inning. Carr and Holdan Redwine entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two innings and one inning respectively.

Robertson, Longman, and Folsom all managed multiple hits for the Racers, while the Racers’ defense didn’t commit a single error.

Racers stymied by Tuttle with 14-1 loss

Monday was a long day for the Newcastle Racers, falling to Tuttle, 14-1.

Tuttle scored six runs in the fourth inning which included a home run. Tuttle added two more home runs on the day. Tuttle pitcher went four innings allowing only one run on two hits, and no walks.

Frazier took the loss for Newcastle, lasting one and one-third innings, allowing one hit and four runs while striking out two. Schanuel and Frazier each had one hit for the Racers.

Upcoming Games

The Racers had a second game against Tuttle scheduled for Tuesday night, but it was too late to be reported because of the Newcastle Pacer’s print deadline. The Racers host the Tony Gwinn Memorial Wood Bat Tournament today (Thursday) through Saturday (related fundraiser meal story in this issue).
