Newcastle’s boys soccer program is getting some positive recognition, but Head Coach Tom Pecore wants to keep the players focused on their next game.
The Racers season record on Tuesday morning was 9-2 with the losses coming in the Tulsa Edison Tournament. Newcastle was undefeated in the regular season, but had a game Tuesday night (too late to be reported because of the Newcastle Pacer’s print deadline) with Chickasha. The teams sat at one and two in the district with Chickasha in the lead having played one more game. Newcastle is at number two, and Madill is at number 3.
According to the national online source for sports, MaxPreps, the Racers are the number one team in Class 4A in Oklahoma and the number 303 team in the country. Pecore said MaxPreps gathers all the data about a team’s season and their record and then ranks them.
Pecore said the bigger picture is that the Racers are being recognized for good soccer outside their borders, and the boys are feeling good about themselves and having a good time.
Pecore said, however, that a team is only as good as its last game.
“We have to keep the kids focused on one game at a time,” Pecore said.
He said the team’s goals are still to get into the playoffs, for a third time in a row, and get deeper into the playoffs this year. The Racers play Harrah tonight (Thursday).
