Kenny Mitchell is April Senior of the Month
In 1944, Blanchard resident Kenneth (Kenny) Jaye Mitchell was born in Fletcher, Oklahoma. He said highlights of his youth included growing up with his six siblings and attending the “Mitchell family reunions” at his grandparents’ house.
He may have gotten into trouble by stealing watermelons from some farmers in Apache, but he was blessed with a dad and grandpa who saw to it to teach him the ethics of hard work and the skill of building things. Those ethics helped him at his first job of sweeping floors at his school. At that time he worked two hours a day, 5 days a week for 60 cents an hour.
In 1967, he married his high school sweetheart and later was blessed with three children while working as a plumber for new home constructions. His favorite vacations were trips to Branson, Missouri, and traveling to Mississippi for the family reunions. A favorite treat was always grilled hamburgers.
Special interests of his are classic cars and going to the car shows with his 1956 Ford car, his 1964 Mercury Comet, and his 1956 Ford pickup.
Newcastle holds precious
MITCHELL on page 3 memories for him like when the Tri-City Cruisers would meet at the Sonic drive-in the first of each month, the old TG&Y, and “good honest businesses” like J&W Tire.
MITCHELL: Thanks the Lord for his blessings
After retiring at age 66, being involved in his church as a deacon, helping with the Tri-City Cruiser car shows, and family have kept him busy. On his bucket list is to attend all the great-grandchildren’s birthday parties for as long as he is able. A favorite song of his is “Thank you Lord for your Blessings on Me.”
His advice for a long and fulfilling life is to attend church and have God at the Center of your life. Also, for the younger generation, obey your parents, stay out of trouble, study, get a good education, and then a good paying job. He added that they should remember that no one is perfect in life.
He feels blessed to have had a good family which helped him have love to give to others. Kenny began coming to the the Newcastle Senior Center in February 2024. He said he enjoys the goulash.
The Newcastle Senior Citizen Center is located at 504 OK-130, Newcastle, OK 73065, phone 405-387-2100. Meals are $5 each and include salad bar, entrée, drink, and dessert.
