The City of Newcastle is looking at the possibility of partnering with Newcastle Public Schools to build tennis courts.
In a March City Council meeting discussion item, City Manager Kevin Self talked about the possibility.
Self said that he, Assistant City Manager Jeannette Mc-Nally, and Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Marks had been discussing the possibility of a partnership with the school to construct a tennis and/or pickleball court.
He said the high school now has a tennis team, and although he is not sure how big it is or how many students they have participating in the sport, they have no place in Newcastle to practice.
“They either go to Mid-America Christian University or Earlywine Park, just to practice,” Self said.
Council members agreed that they thought it was a good idea, so Self said City staff will continue exploring the idea.
The City will be seeking out potential funding opportunities for a facility.
Councilman Mike Fullerton said he felt like school district times could be blocked out for students to practice.
He said this also opens up the idea of school tennis tournaments being held in Newcastle.
