Plastic, plastic, everywhere

To the Editor: t is spring in Oklahoma and the wind comes sweeping down the plain. Along with the wind, plastic bags are stuck in the weeds and the fence lines. Not long ago, plastic bags were simply an eyesore. Today, we know so much more.

Plastic bags don’t disappear with the spring flowers and green grass. Plastic washes into our rivers, gets buried in our landfills, and is eaten by our livestock.

The plastic never disappears! It breaks down into smaller pieces called microplastics which in turn can enter our bodies with food, water and air. Plastic in our bodies would be equal to the size of a credit card. These microplastics have harmful chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer.

Today, we can change this source of plastic entering our environment and our bodies. We can refuse to use plastic bags when purchasing items at all retail stores. Take your own reusable bags into the store and proudly fill them with your purchases. If you do not have bags, most stores have reuseable bags for sale.

Remember to say, “No thanks, I don’t use plastic bags!” Sherrie McNall
