Amanda Boyd, PA-C is featured speaker for February Chamber of Commerce luncheon
One of every two women and one in four men will suffer an osteoporosis fracture. Twenty-five percent of osteoporosis sufferers who fall will die from their fall.
That’s what Amanda Boyd, PA-C from the Ortho Central Bone Health Clinic at Norman Regional Health System told members of the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon on Tuesday, February 25 at the Newcastle Library Community Room.
Boyd was the featured speaker for the luncheon and provided information about the various stages one can expect from osteoporosis, as well as who should be tested. She said those people are women over the age of 65 and men over the age of 70. In Boyd’s opinion, she believes this is too late and testing should be done sooner in many cases.
Boyd said after a fragility fracture diagnosis, a patient should have bone densitometry done and may have to have a biopsy or even surgery. She added that the treatments for osteoporosis includes vitamin D and calcium, physical activity, lifestyle modifications and medicines.
Boyd said at the Ortho Central Bone Health Clinic, they partner with their patients to determine what they want to do.
