Girls move on to Area Tourney this week
A first-round win against Blanchard and the Championship game win against Harrah over the weekend gave the Newcastle Racer girls the title of Regional Champions.
Newcastle (ranked #6) and Lincoln Christian (ranked #1) will face off at the Area Tournament March 6-8 at Hennessey. The winner will advance to the State Tournament, while the loser will advance to game 5 on Saturday, March 8 (see bracket below).
Newcastle and Lincoln Christian both come into the Area Tournament with no district losses.
The Racers opened the Regional Tournament at Blanchard, winning the game 42-23. Newcastle came out quickly scoring 16 points to Blanchard’s 7 in the first period. The second period was low scoring with Blanchard scoring 6 points to the Racers’ 4.
As the tough defensive matchup continued, the momentum changed as Newcastle put more third and fourth period points on the board than the Lions — 8-5 and 125. The Racers won the game by a score of 42-23.
Kindred led Newcastle scoring with 14 points.
Whitney Wollenberg had 8, all in the first period. Ziyah Sims had 8.
Lilly Taliaferro had 5, Reagan Greenroyd had 3, and Jailiana Salas had 2.
The win placed Newcastle in a game for the championship against Harrah.
The Racers dominated the game the first three quarters before Harrah starting tossing in three-pointers in the fourth period. By that time it was too late. Newcastle won 63-50.
Kindred again led Newcastle scoring with 14 points. Wollenberg and Taliaferro each had 12 points.
Ziyah Sims had 9. Bella Allen and Greenroyd had 5 each. Zarayia Sims had 4 and Salas added 2.
RACER BOYS GO 2 AND OUT
Newcastle’s Racers moved into the Regional Tournament with a 49-46 win at District against Mount St. Mary.
This was the same team they would face in the second round of Regionals, but lose to by a score of 45-33.
The Racers were on the short end of a 53-45 loss to Blanchard in the first round of Regionals.
This moved them to a game against Cleveland, which the Racers won, 59-39.
The final game, against Mount St. Mary, ended the Racers season for 2025.
Newcastle graduates seven seniors this year, but if the roster remains the same, they will return next year with five seniors, three juniors, and three sophomores.
