ECC special education intervention program earns national award

A team of educators from Newcastle Public Schools traveled to a conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 9-11 to accept an award for a special education intervention program.

The team was led by Early Childhood Center Principal Jennifer Rosenbloom.

Superintendent Dr. Melonie Hau said this program in particular is helping to meet the students’ needs and keeping them from falling behind. She said it also engages the students’ parents to make sure their child’s needs are met.

Hau said the ECC, under Rosenbloom’s leadership, really cares about each student.

The Newcastle educators traveled to The American Council on Rural Special Education (ACRES) annual conference at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel, where they attended a luncheon and received the award and then were able to participate in professional development activities. The conference theme was “Strong as Steel: Celebrating Resilience in Rural Special Education.” ACRES became aware of what the local program was doing through a partnership with Oklahoma University and the ECC, according to Hau. She said an OU professor nominated them for the award.

Hau said NPS is excited to be partnering with OU.

She added that the ECC is fortunate to have Jill Mayes, a behavior interventionist, as a dedicated full-time staff member.

Hau said, “They have worked hard to make sure they have a strong program for students with special needs, and to keep them from falling behind academically.”
