Cattlemen’s Association recognizes youth with scholarships, jackets

This past year the McClain County Cattlemen’s Association was busy raising money to present a high school senior who declares an Agriculture degree and or Agriculture related field of study with a $1,000 scholarship.

Due to the generous donation, the organization awarded seven $1,000 scholarships. The recipients of these scholarships are: Walker Chandler, Paige Burns, Cody Dennis, Bradey VanSchuyver, Taylor Bridwell, Presley Strickland, and Mattie Green.

Fundraiser activities included a raffle for a hand-made swinging bench constructed and donated by Gary Perry. The bench was won by Derrick Neal, Neal Cattle Co. The final fundraiser was a pie and cake auction with Jim Evans auctioning 11 pies and cakes at the banquet. Chandler Beef also donated a selection of beef cuts to the auction.

The cattlemen appreciate Great Plains Kubota for donating free service for equipment. Okie Rents donated weekend use of skid-steer to the auction. Door Prizes were donated by REC of Lindsay, Farmers Co-Op and Purina of Wayne, MWI Animal Health and Oklahoma Beef Consultants Brent Lynn, Purcell Tractor Supply, P & K Equipment, Livestock Nutrition Center and Shane Emberson, Okie Rents, Great Plains Kubota and Rick Caldwell. Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma donated and cooked the steaks for this year’s banquet.

The following members will be serving on the McClain County Cattlemen Board of Directors for 2025: District 1 - Jeff Staggs and Nate Grose; District 2 - Rocky Bates and David Perry, District 3 - Matt Minor and Everett Wollenberg; member at large - Brent Lynn The McClain County Cattlemen’s organization presents education seminars throughout the year with various events and seminars to assist area cattlemen and women in making informative decisions on their ranches and farms. The winner of the Grand Champion Bred and Owned Heifer in the fall fair was won by Trigg Anderson, Purcell 4-H and the Reserve Grand Champion was Wyatt Christian of the Washington 4-H, both received cash awards. Showmanship jackets were presented to the winners of the Jr. Spring Livestock Show. The junior winner was Grady Emberson, Blanchard 4-H; intermediate winner was Asher Pollan, Washington FFA; and the senior winner was Emma Lynn, Purcell FFA. • photo provided
