Girls, boys teams beat Bethany Broncos in regular season
Lawton MacArthur took home the championship trophy for the boys and Mustang was named girls’ champion at the conclusion of the Newcastle- hosted Sweet Pea Invitational on Saturday.
Both the Racer boys and Racer girls took home second place finishes. The boys took the 57-53 loss to Class 5A MacArthur, and the girls lost to Class 6A Mustang, 52-45.
All-Tournament honors for Newcastle went to Kalani Kindred, Whitney Wollenberg, Antonio Brown and Zach Cragg.
The boys, coming off a regular season win against the #9-ranked Bethany Broncos by a 53-49 score, again took on the Broncos and won, 3933. This was in game two. In game one, the Racers beat Coweta, 59-34.
Cragg led scoring for Newcastle in the Coweta game, hitting 12 points. Cragg had 15 in the tournament game against Bethany, while Brown added another 12 points.
Brown then hit 28 points in the game against MacArthur, while Cragg had 17 points.
Racer Girls
The Racer girls came off a 56-40 win over a top 10 team, the Bethany Broncos, before starting their tournament play. Kalani Kindred had 21 points for the Racers and Raegan Greenroyd had 18.
In game one of the Sweet Pea Invitational, Newcastle beat Altus, 69-41. In game two, the Racers beat Classen SAS, 78-31.
Against Altus, Greenroyd had 19 points. Kindred had 14, Ziyah Sims had 8. Wollenberg and Lilly Taliaferro each had 7. Emerson Marble added 6.
In the Classen SAS game, Kindred had 15 points. Kaelin Horton had 11. Ziyah Sims had 10. Wollenberg had 8. Taliaferro had 7, and Jailiana Salas, Marble and Ava Snider had five each.
Against Mustang, the Racers were just two points off going into the fourth period by a score of 37-35. Mustang’s 13-point fourth period outdid the Racers’ 10 for the win.
Kindred nailed 28 points to lead Newcastle scoring. Taliaferro and Wollenberg had five each.
Newcastle was scheduled to take on Tuttle Tuesday night, but because of Newcastle Pacer print deadlines earlier Tuesday, we could not report the outcome.
The Racer boys and girls play again at home tomorrow (Friday) night against Weatherford.
