Schedule shows several tough games are ahead for Racers

Scoring from eight Racers spurred a 58-54 win for Newcastle over Class 4A numberfour ranked Kingfisher last week. Their next game, the Racers dominated Clinton with a 75-12 win.

Assistant Coach Taylor Wollenberg said the Kingfisher game was a great win for the Racers — beating a top 4 team at their place. Head Coach Jim Perinovic said this game and the next two weeks will be difficult, but that’s why the Racers play such a tough first half of the season.

The Racers, who were ranked number 9 at the time of the game, held the lead until the third quarter, when they fell behind by two points. Newcastle came out in the fourth period, and they were led by Kalani Kindred’s 12 points. Overall, the Racers had 24 fourth-period points to Kingfisher’s 14 for the win.

Whitney Wollenberg had nine points for Newcastle. Ziyah Sims had eight and Kaelin Horton had seven. Reagan Greenroyd added five, while Lilly Taliaferro had four. Zarayia Sims and Jailiana Salas had two apiece. Abbie Myers led Kingfisher scoring with a 16-point output.

In an odd movement after the game, even with the big win, Newcastle moved from number 9 to number 11 in Class 4A. With the two wins, the Racers on Monday were 11-4 overall and 6-0 in Class 4A competition.

Newcastle’s offense and defense was indisputable January 16 as the Racers played Clinton. Eight Racers scored on offense, led by Kindred’s 18 points. Greenroyd had 15 points. Wollenberg had 13. Ziyah Sims had 11, and Zariyah Sims had 8. Taliaferro had six. Ava Snider had 3, and Brylee Scott had 1.

Defensively, Newcastle held Clinton to only two players scoring, with one player scoring seven and the second player scoring 5.

Newcastle was scheduled to play number seven-ranked Bethany Tuesday night, but because of the Newcastle Pacer print deadline earlier that day, the outcome could not be reported.
