NHS, junior high Racer wrestlers beat Santa Fe South, Putnam City North
Racer Wrestling took home top honors from the Newcastle Duals January 16 with both high school and junior high wins against metro rivals Santa Fe South and Putnam City North.
The high school beat Santa Fe South by a 72-8 margin and then took the win against PC North, 53-29. The junior high boys won 54-24 against Santa Fe South and then 42-21 against PC North.
Newcastle’s girls wrestled a series of exhibition matches with wins against all of their high school and junior high opponents.
At the Carl Albert Tournament, the varsity came in 11th place. Newcastle had several Racers place including a nail biter in the finals for Nicholas Lozano, who was named Wrestler of the Event. Down 3-5 in the final seconds, Lozano was able to secure a takedown at the buzzer to win the match, 6-5.
Rylan Rinehart took Match of the Event for his win over the number 3 seed in the quarterfinals.
Tatum McDaniel, wrestling at 145 lbs, was the only placer for the Racer girls.
Carl Albert placers were: Colton Dobbs, 5th; Gage Stark, 4th; McDaniel, 2nd; Jaxon Mitchell, 5th; and Lozano, 1st.
Newcastle is scheduled to wrestle Community Christian for senior night on Tuesday, January 21, but because of Newcastle Pacer print deadlines, we are unable to report the result.
District Duals were rescheduled with weigh-ins at 5 p.m. today (Thursday) in Elgin. Joining Elgin and Newcastle are Lawton Eisenhour and Oklahoma City Southeast. Tickets are available at gofan.co.
The Newcastle junior high boys will take part in the Chickasha Junior High Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Racer girls will wrestle at the Yukon Miller Women’s Invitational on Saturday.
During the Newcastle versus Bridge Creek match earlier this month, both schools’ wrestlers came together to pray for Naty Metheny, a Bridge Creek senior softball player and wrestling manager who has had health issues.
