Newcastle varsity wrestling had a successful outing to Bridge Creek last week, but District Duals at Elgin were postponed due to weather conditions.
Racer coaches touted several matches with some of those wrestlers bumping up to create the most competitive lineup. Going into the 190 lb match, the score was 22-34. Bridge Creek was forfeiting at 285, so Newcastle needed to get a fall and win to take the dual.
The boys wrestler of the event was freshman Austin Mitchell, who got the pin at 190 lbs and the match of the dual was Maddyx Snow, who was bumped up to 215 lbs. His match was tied up late in the third period at one point apiece.
Snow, a senior, was able to make a takedown in the last few seconds, securing the match and dual win for the Racers.
Because of illness and injuries, Newcastle was unable to field any junior high girls wrestlers.
The high school girls won the majority of their matches wrestled, but because of the number of empty weights were unable to win either of the duals.
Trinity Duran was the wrestler of the event, winning both of her matches. Tapanga Bornt had the match of the event with a win.
The wrestling squads are scheduled to take part in the Newcastle Triangular duals against Putnam City North and Santa Fe South today (Thursday), and then the 59th Annual Macolm Wade Memorial Invitational at Carl Albert High School on Friday and Saturday.
They return to action Tuesday, January 21 with a home dual and senior night against Crossings Christian School.
District Duals, which were postponed due to the weather, have been rescheduled for Thursday, January 23 at Elgin High School.
