Mid-America Technology Center (MATC) has been selected as a recipient of a grant from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). This grant aims to enhance students’ educational experiences and equip them with specialized skills through a propane-focused curriculum.
The initiative is expected to help open doors to more career opportunities for students upon graduation.
Scott McKinney, HVAC Technician teacher, and Shane Kirby, Plumbing assistant teacher, attended PERC’s in-person ‘Train the Trainer’ Summer 2024 class. They received insight and instruction on the implementation of PERC’s robust 80-hour HVAC and Plumbing Technical Training curriculum, which will give students deeper insight into propane systems through hands-on lab experiences.
The PERC grant enables MATC to integrate propane- related appliances and equipment into its classroom labs. With a funding level of $10,000, MATC can access specialized propane curricula, from foundational overviews to advanced 80hour HVAC and plumbing technical training.
At MATC, this grant supports: • The purchase of cutting- edge propane appliances, regulators, and piping systems.
• Hands-on training with propane hydrometers, pressure gauges, and leak detection equipment.
• The development of skills in installing and maintaining propane-powered systems.
A unique aspect of the program is the involvement of the “Propane Advisor,” Bob Billen, who partners with the school to ensure proper installation of propane systems, deliver guest lectures, and oversee student projects.
MATC’s HVAC and Plumbing students are already benefiting from this program. Last week, Billen, who is the safety director for Oklahoma LP Gas, visited MATC to provide propane- related safety training. Students also completed Chapter 2 of the PERC curriculum, advancing their understanding of propane systems.
School sources said the propane curriculum not only equips MATC students with practical skills, but also prepares them for certifications through PERC’s Learning Center, such as the HVAC and Plumber Technical Training exam.
These certifications are hoped to give graduates a competitive edge in the job market. The MATC spokesperson said this grant should provide an elevated learning experience and improve career readiness for students.
