Newcastle’s girls won their first game at the Harrah Panther Classic Tournament, but then lost and rallied to come back for a third place finish.
They won against John Marshall, 94-16, in the opening game, but then lost in overtime to Shawnee, 39-38, and then came back to beat Bishop McGuinness, 44-36. Newcastle freshman Kalani Kindred was named to the All-Tournament Team (related photo on this page). She scored in the double figures throughout the tournament with games of 19, 18 and 12 points.
In the game against Shawnee, Newcastle had periods with 11, 5, 11, 5 and 7 (OT) points, while Shawnee had 11, 11, 3, 6 and 8 (OT). As mentioned, Kindred had 12 points while Lilly Taliaferro had 12, three of those were threepointers. Raegan Greenroyd had 5, Whitney Wollenberg and Kaelin Horton had 4 each, and Zarayia Sims had 1.
Shawnee was led by Lilly Megehee with 27 points.
Against Bishop McGuinness, the Racers had outputs of 13, 8, 13 and 10. McGuinness had 7, 7, 13 and 9.
The Racers were led by Kindred’s 18 points, and Zarayia Sims’ 9. Wollenberg came in next with 8 points, while Ziyah Sims had 4. Greenroyd added 3 and Taliaferro had 2.
The Racers, ranked #10 in OSSAA Class 4A, were scheduled to play Blanchard Tuesday night but results could not be reported because of the Newcastle Pacer’s print deadlines earlier Tuesday afternoon. They are scheduled to play Anadarko on December 20, and then they’ll be in two tournaments: the Sickle Cell December 21 and the Mustang Invitational December 26-28.
