For the first time ever, the Newcastle High School Unified Cheer Team was preparing to compete last Friday for a chance to qualify for the OSSAA State Cheer Championship.

They placed second, which qualified them to compete at State on November 16 at Moore High School.

Dr. Cathy Walker, superintendent of schools, said, “This is a historic moment, offering our school the opportunity to bring home an OSSAA State Trophy — a huge accomplishment for both the athletes and our school community.”

The Unified Cheer Team is part of the CHEER on page 3 Special Olympics Unified Sports program, which brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team. The program is about more than just winning — it’s about creating a culture of inclusion, teamwork and mutual respect.

CHEER: School invites residents to Unified Spirit Night

Walker said, “Our athletes work together, demonstrating that we are stronger when we unite around shared goals, celebrating our differences and abilities.”

She said to celebrate the spirit of inclusion and the achievements of the Unified athletes, the community is invited to join the school system for Unified Spirit Night on November 1 during the home Newcastle Racer football game against Bishop McGuinness.

“This special night is dedicated to recognizing the importance of unity in sports and the broader community,” Walker said. “At Unified Spirit Night, we will come together as a school and community to show our support for all athletes.

“The Unified Cheer Squad will perform after the first quarter, exemplifying the joy of being part of a team that embraces diversity.”

This event is not just about cheerleading; it’s a celebration of every athlete’s contributions, regardless of ability.

“We encourage everyone to wear their school colors, fill the stands, and cheer for our Unified athletes, showcasing our commitment to inclusion,” Walker said.

She continued, “As we approach these exciting events, we encourage everyone to show their support for our Unified athletes, cheering them on as they pursue greatness on and off the field.”
