School Board okays dates for primary, general elections
A Newcastle Board of Education primary election is scheduled for February 11, 2025, and a general election is scheduled for April 1, 2025. The purpose is to elect a board member for position No. 5 — which has a five-year term of office.
The seat is currently filled by Jeremy Gilbertson, who was appointed by the school board at the February 13 meeting this year. A resolution approved during the October Board meeting indicates that the primary election will only be held if three or more candidates file for the seat.
A general election will be held if only two candidates file for the position, or if no candidate on the primary election receives more than 50% of the votes cast.
To be eligible as a candidate, a person must reside in the district for at least six months preceding the first day of the filing period, and have been a registered voter with the county election board at an address located within the geographical boundaries of the district for six months preceding the first day of the filing period.

They cannot have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to a misdemeanor involving embezzlement of a felony, or have a similar conviction or plea in another state.
Successful school board candidates must complete at least 12 hours of instruction on education issues, including school finance, Oklahoma election laws, and ethics, duties and responsibilities of district board of education members.
Eligible voters are those who are registered with the county election board at an address within the geographical boundaries of the school district.
