Pioneer Library System Foundation received more than $30,000 from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and Institute of Museum and Library Services for health literacy programming. Funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services support a variety of programs across library branches addressing the health and wellness needs of Oklahomans.
Newcastle, Blanchard, Norman East, Norman West, Purcell, and Tecumseh Public Libraries awarded grants will support such programs as: Healthy Cooking, Intergenerational Yoga, Tai Chi, Kickboxing, HipHop, Self Defense for Families, StoryWalk Expansions, Music Trails, Art Therapy, Healthy Food Gardening, and more.
Individual health literacy encompasses the skills required to find, understand, and apply information for making health-related decisions.
These funds enable PLS branches to continue creating programs and materials to enhance health literacy skills for all ages.
These funds support fitness classes, healthy cooking demonstrations, gardening programs, StoryWalks, and so much more. Newcastle is among communities offering the StoryWalk. It is considered a fun, educational activity that combines family time, physical activity, and literacy.
PLS today offers full-access libraries in 10 communities.
