Pioneer Library System (PLS) is proud to announce that Executive Director Lisa Wells has been named an honoree for The Journal Record’s 2024 Woman of the Year.

This prestigious honor recognizes Wells for her extraordinary contributions to the library system and her leadership within the community, and this is Well’s third recognition as a Woman of the Year honoree, being nominated in 2019 and 2020. Since this is Lisa’s third year as being selected as a Woman of the Year honoree, she will be inducted into the Circle of Excellence.

Wells’ dedication to mentoring has evolved alongside her career. In her current role as Executive Director, she continues to inspire others, providing guidance on strategic thinking, advocacy, and decision- making.

“I truly believe that if we aren’t moving forward, we are left behind,” Wells said.

Wells credits much of her leadership philosophy to her mentor, former PLS Executive Director Mary Sherman.

“Mary taught me to always look to the future and beyond the library profession, and that perspective has shaped our innovative approach at PLS.”

Under Wells’ leadership, Pioneer Library System has garnered national recognition, including being named the Oklahoma Library Association’s 2023 Oklahoma Library of the Year and receiving Leadership Oklahoma’s 2023 Business Leadership Award. Wells also spearheaded initiatives like installing North America’s first 24-Hour Library and developing PLS’ own mobile app, both of which exemplify the cutting-edge services offered by the library system.

Wells emphasized her ability to turn challenges into opportunities as one of her greatest strengths.

“My most significant accomplishment is my routine ability to turn the negative into opportunity, and make sound, impactful decisions in moments of crisis,” Wells stated.

One such moment was the sudden closure of Norman Public Library Central in November 2023 due to mold contamination. Wells quickly led the executive team in reassigning all staff to other locations within the system while developing a plan for an alternative service space.

Wells’ pioneering spirit and unwavering dedication to improving the library system have not only transformed PLS, but also enriched the lives of countless Oklahomans. Her recognition as Woman of the Year 2024 is a testament to her hard work, vision, and leadership.

Founded in 1958, PLS today offers full-access libraries in 10 communities throughout Cleveland, McClain, and Pottawatomie counties, as well as additional access locations in smaller communities and outreach services.
