Townsend reaches 1,000 kills
The Racers Volleyball team just missed out on a trip to the Class 4A State Tournament after taking the loss to Victory Christian at Regionals on Wednesday, October 9.
Coach Hannah Andrews said, “Volleyball this season was extremely successful. Overall the team went 19-10. We won our first game at Regionals and unfortunately had a tough loss against Victory Christian in the finals en route to State.”
Newcastle, ranked #12 going into post-season, finished the regular season with a 3-1 victory over #10-ranked Tuttle, before heading into the Regional Tournament. At Regionals, the Racers beat Inola, 3-0, with scores of 25-22, 2513, and 25-18.
A Regionals match with the host school, Victory Christian, came next, but the Racers lost by scores of 25-12, 2512, and 25-18.
Andrews said, “The team did some incredible things this season, beating some really big schools, swept their rival Tuttle, but most importantly they supported one another along the way.”
Andrews said senior starter and captain, Kacie Townsend reached 1,000 kills. She said this year’s team did not have the tallest roster, but by far they were the most determined and had all the fight.
“One of the scrappiest teams, I have had the privilege of coaching,” she said. “This senior group was my first group of freshmen, seeing them grow into the leaders that they are is an absolute joy. I am so very proud of this team and all their hard work. It was a great season.”
Class 4A State Tournament contenders include: Community Christian, Bethany, Cascia Hall, Victory Christian, Lincoln Christian, Regent Prep, Tuttle and Tecumseh.
