October Senior of the Month Evelyn Markham
Evelyn Markham is a kind and empathetic woman.
She is making sure those who are facing trials are remembered and acknowledged by others, as she organizes cards to be signed and sent from the Newcastle Senior Center and from Newcastle First Baptist Faith and Fitness class.
At 91 years of age, she is hard working and dependable — always stepping up when she sees a need to be filled.
She was born in Cyril, Oklahoma, but also lived in Guam, California, Arkansas, Burns Flat, Oklahoma, and Colorado. She was living in Moore when she moved to Newcastle in 1989.
Proudly she acknowledges her biggest achievements were marrying her late husband, Murl R. Markham, and raising her two sons and one daughter.
Along with being a wife and mother, she worked at Custom Developing and Finishing, producing school pictures.
Food and fellowship drew her to the senior center in 1993 to enjoy her favorite chicken dishes and to Faith and Fitness in 2012 for exercise.
Those at the senior center find her laughing a lot and trusting in the Lord as she demonstrates a positive attitude. Her advice for someone younger is, “Treat everyone like you want to be treated.”
