Racers defeat the Demons

This week was the Duncan Demons, and next week the Racers play Midwest City. Welcome to Class 5A football!

Newcastle entered the new classification with a 60-7 victory over Duncan, scroring 24 points in the first quarter, 15 in the second quarter, 14 in the third quarter and 7 in the fourth. All this while holding Duncan to only 7 points, which they scored in the final quarter.

Racer Head Coach Jeff Brickman said, “We did well offensively and defensively. We blocked a punt for a touchdown and ran back a forced fumble for a touchdown, and we had zero turnovers.”

Big plays during the game included the aforementioned with the blocked punt by Thomas Barbee. Ashton Shumard had the forced fumble. And T.J. Bradford is back and had several long runs, according to the coach.

Brickman noted that Bradford rushed for 193 yards (and 2 TDs) on 14 carries. Jackson Schanuel threw for 154 yards (and 3 TDs) on 9/16 passing. Kaden Longman caught 4 passes for 93 yards and 2 TDs. Offense as a unit had 405 yards.

“Defensively we held the opponent to 7 points and under 100 yards rushing,” Brickman said.

He said Schanuel, Tucker Brown, and Taj Smith had 8 tackles each. Longman and Shumard had interceptions. Bryan Medrano made 2 field goals including a 44-yarder.

Players of the game included: Taj Smith as the Most Valuable Player, Bradford was named for his effort on offense, and Schanuel was named for his defensive play.

Barbee took the honors for special teams. Trey Burchett received the Sledge Hammer award, and Smith received the Knockdowns (pancakes) award.

Newcastle is now 1-0 in District play with an overall record of 2-3. The Racers travel to Midwest City tomorrow (Friday) night to face the Bombers.

Brickman said, “We both are 1-0 in District and we need a great week of preparation to get ready to go on the road.”

Midwest City also has a season record of 2-3. They beat Southeast, 47-13, last Friday, and beat Class 6A Putnam City West in pre-season competition. Their losses have come from Class 6A Piedmont, Class 5A Carl Albert, and Class 5A Del City.
