Elgin held Newcastle scoreless in the first half of the football game Friday night, but the Racers came back to score twice in the second half.

The Owls put 56 points on the board to win the game, 5614.

Newcastle Head Coach Jeff Brickman said, “The game snowballed on us early. We turned the ball over on offense and special teams, which resulted in a large deficit in the first quarter.”

Elgin scored 28 in the first, and then added 14 in the second and another 14 in the third quarter.

Brickman added that Elgin has a great offensive and defensive line that dominated the game.

“The line of scrimmage usually determines the outcomes of games,” Brickman said.

At halftime, Brickman challenged his assistant coaches and the team that starting in the second half, he would watch the game film and he wanted to see better blocking and tackling.

“They responded with a 14-14 second half,” Brickman said. “That being said, Elgin is the best team we have played since I have been here.”

Elgin rushed for more than 200 yards compared to Newcastle’s output of under 100 yards.

The game also signaled the end of non-district competition. The Racers begin District 5A-1 play in their game this week against Duncan.

Brickman said Jackson Schanuel, Kaden Longman, Taj Smith, Cody Nix, and Blake Allen all had strong performances.

Longman was named Most Valuable Player of the game. Schanuel was the Offense Player of the Game, Allen was Defense Player of the Game. Jayson Simson was named Special Teams Player of the Game.

Nix was given the Hard Hat award, and Zach Cragg was given the Sledgehammer award. The coach also praised Simpson for stepping into a position in which he had never played.

Brickman said, ‘We had our first and second team deep snappers go out due to injury and Jayson Simson stepped up and long-snapped during the game without any practice.”

The Racers host Duncan for Homecoming tomorrow (Friday) night. Brickman said it will be the Racers’ first game competing in Class 5A and they are looking forward to the challenge.

NHS student reporter Caleb Hysell said the Homecoming parade lineup begins at the high school at 8:30 a.m. and the parade will start at 10 a.m.

The Homecoming ceremony will begin at 5:40 p.m. when the Homecoming royalty will be crowned.

Hysell said there are 24 sets of partners this year with 56 total candidates (some candidates are partnered in a pair of three to accommodate for the lesser number of males to females). Hysell said candidates come from volleyball, softball, football and band.
