Recount verifies Wilk over Whaley for Republicans in HD-20

A two-vote race to see who would be named the Republican candidate for State House District 20 soon turned into a five-vote race. And that’s how it would remain.

The difference was the inclusion of provisional votes that had to be counted after initial results on election day. They were included, and then a recount was held which verified the results.

Jonathan Wilk, of Goldsby, will now be on the November 5 General Election ballot, facing Democrat Mitchell Jacob, of Newcastle.

The recount had been requested by Mike Whaley, HD-20 candidate from Blanchard. He initially put down a deposit which would pay for the recount. The State Election Board completed and certified the recount, which took place at courtrooms in both McClain and Cleveland Counties. Again, that certification resulted in the same vote count as was initially reported by the Election Boards.

Wilk said, “We thank everyone who supported our campaign and voted. Every single donation, volunteer effort, and vote contributed to our victory.”

Wilk’s campaign said they appreciated the transparency and communication from the McClain County and Cleveland County Election Boards, and the Oklahoma Election Board for enacting specified law and carrying out the State Statutes for recount.

Voting results were the following: McClain County - Wilk, 1,366, Whaley 1,350; and Cleveland County Wilk, 307; and Whaley 318. Total voting in HD-20 was: Wilk, 1,673 to Whaley, 1,668.
