August is time for work in the District

The arrival of August in Congress means that both the House of Representatives and the Senate are out of session and the annual district work period has begun. In other words, this is a time when members of Congress are able to spend the month back in their districts with their constituents and local communities.

The arrival of August in Congress means that both the House of Representatives and the Senate are out of session and the annual district work period has begun. In other words, this is a time when members of Congress are able to spend the month back in their districts with their constituents and local communities.

This August tradition is historic in Congress, dating back many years. However, it was in the twentieth century that it became official when Congress passed the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946, which made it law that both Chambers of Congress would “adjourn sine die not later than the last day in the month of July,” unless the nation is currently at war or the President had declared a state of emergency for some other reason.

Although this legislation has been amended over the years, the premise remains the same — August is a time for Representatives and Senators to return to their districts for an extended period with their constituents.

This time in August is something I consider very valuable, as it helps me to ensure I am remaining in touch with those who elected me.

This year, I am looking forward to conversing with small business owners and employees, local community leaders, Chambers of Commerce, leadership from Tinker Air Force Base and Fort Sill Army Installation, and many other constituents throughout Oklahoma’s Fourth District, where they will express to me firsthand the issues important to them and what I can do to help.

These critical conversations are what I take back with me to Washington, DC, as I know that my duty as a member of Congress is to the people and the August district work period is critical to ensuring I am accurately representing them.

As we kick off August 2024, I am excited to hit the ground running in Oklahoma’s Fourth District.
