Weapons detectors in use this year at NPS athletic events

Everyone who enters an athletics facility in Newcastle will be passing by a weapons detector when entering.

Everyone who enters an athletics facility in Newcastle will be passing by a weapons detector when entering.

Newcastle’s Board of Education recently approved the purchase of several detectors and they will be located at the entry of facilities this year, according to Athletic Director Brent Hodges.

The AD said the shooting last year at a Choctaw High School football game changed everything. Hodges said we are living in a very interesting time culturally, and we are not living in fear, but instead living in preparation and safety.

He said fans need to understand that Newcastle has a policy that no outside food or drinks are allowed. There also are no backpacks allowed.

“We will be holding to these game day standards at all of our sporting events,” Hodges said. “We want it to be safe for your grandma and your three-year-old.”

Hodges said Newcastle wants bringing the family to the game to be a good thing.

“You can’t prepare for everything, but we want to live in being prepared,” Hodges said.
