As the Pioneer Library System enters the last weeks of the Summer Learning Challenge, enthusiasm and excitement among the staff and community are still going strong, according to a PLS spokesperson.

“Engaging with learning and reading daily in the summer keeps young minds growing and builds confidence for later learning success. From stories and crafts to science and music to kindergarten readiness and circus fun, the library is the place to create and play in the summer!” said Meghan Hollingsworth, Selector and Early Literacy and School Readiness coordinator for PLS.

Participants complete SLC upon logging 1,000 points for time spent learning and reading and can select items from their library’s treasure chest at every point badge earned. Those signed up in the Early Childhood, Child, and Teen categories also get a free book at 500 and 1,000 points, thanks to a generous donation provided by the PLS Foundation.

By finishing the challenge, participants will be contributing to the books donated to the Cleveland and McClain County Health Departments, and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation health clinics as a part of their WIC programs.

SLC runs through August 15.“ PLS had 389 STEAM programs this summer. Can you believe that? That is a lot of differences made in a lot of lives, and we can’t wait to see what brilliant things folks dream up in the fall,” said STEAM Signature Services Coordinator Aaron Pence.

With the coming conclusion of the Summer Learning Challenge, PLS also looks forward to future programming such as Community Conversation events starting in September. Information for future programming can be found on the events calendar on the PLS website.

Founded in 1958, PLS today offers full-access libraries in 10 communities including Newcastle, throughout Cleveland, McClain, and Pottawatomie Counties, as well as additional access locations in smaller communities and outreach services including Business Services and the PLS Mobile Maker Lab.

Log SLC points at pioneer. beanstack.org to earn rewards from any PLS location.
