Newcastle’s Racers took care of business in their game with Harrah Saturday night to win the District Title, 86-36. They will play in Regionals at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in Harrah against Lincoln Christian School.
The Racer girls (related photo on page 2) lost to Harrah, 58-49, and will continue in the consolation brackets of Regionals at Harrah in a game against McClain at 1:30 p.m. today.
Newcastle’s boys scored 25 in the first period, 27 in the second period and 24 in the third period to dominate Harrah and provide playing time for several players who haven’t had the chance this season.
Senior Chase Sucharda led the Racers’ scoring with 24 points. Three of those were from three-point land, and Sucharda went three of four from the foul line. Sophomore Carl’Sheon Young had 12 points, junior Bobby Burrell had nine, and sophomore Antonio Brown had eight. Almost the entire roster scored during the game.
Harrah’s Brendan Cravens had 11 points to lead his team in scoring.
Coach Brown said the play of the game came when junior Mark Deal, who had been working to get in a game for the Racers, took the ball in for a slam dunk (photo on page 1) and surprised everyone.
Brown said the Racers will have to continue to play together and at a high level in order to be successful against Lincoln Christian. He said the opponent plays hard as a unit, so there really won’t be any one player to key against.
Since the Racer girls have one loss, they’ll have to win out from here. A second loss will end their season.
