3 Newcastle residents in collision on I-35

Three Newcastle residents were treated and released with unknown injuries after an automobile collision on U.S. Interstate 35 at 7:44 p.m. on June 11.

Three Newcastle residents were treated and released with unknown injuries after an automobile collision on U.S. Interstate 35 at 7:44 p.m. on June 11.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report from Trooper Jarrod Terry, Roy E. Harris, 68, of Newcastle, was driving a 2013 Nissan Rogue southbound on I-35, traveling about 65 mph when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2020 Kia Soul.

Trooper Terry’s report states that the Soul, was being driven at a high rate of speed by Roger L. Smith, 33, of Yukon.

Upon impact the Harris vehicle spun and struck the west barrier wall with the rear of the vehicle.

At the same time, Smith’s vehicle rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its top.

Smith was ejected approximately 60 feet, the Trooper states.

Smith was transported and admitted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he was listed in critical condition with head injuries. A passenger, Parker A. Morgan, 25, of Yukon, refused medical treatment to an arm injury.

Harris was transported to Norman Regional Hospital where he was treated and released. Passengers Jana L. Harris, 68, of Newcastle, and Virginia E. Shores, 90, of Newcastle, were also transported to Norman Regional Hospital, treated and released.

The OHP report indicates that the collision is still under investigation. Assisting at the scene were OHP Troopers Tony Lemay and Matt Rackley. Also assisting were EMSTAT, and the Norman Police and Fire Departments.
