Newcastle man was booked into McClain County Jail at 8:07 p.m. Monday and is facing a charge of First Degree Murder following the death of a baby. Hunter Allen Smiley, 25, is in custody. On April 11, 2024, the Newcastle Police Department requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to assist with a child abuse investigation. On the afternoon of April 10, officers received a call stating a 9-month-old baby was unresponsive at a residence in Newcastle. The baby was quickly transported to a local hospital to be evaluated and treated.
On April 12, the baby passed away. OSBI special agents spoke with Smiley, the baby’s father, who was with the child when officers arrived on scene.
Based on the information obtained during the investigation, Smiley was arrested and booked into the McClain County Jail. OSBI notes that this is still an ongoing investigation at this time. The baby was transported to the Office of the Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner to determine a cause and manner of death.
The OSBI said they thank the Newcastle Police Department for assisting with the investigation.
