City accepts low bidder on Eunice Drive curb, gutter

A project which would have cost the City of Newcastle a $1 million outlay is now coming in much lower because of a change in the project planning and division of labor.

A project which would have cost the City of Newcastle a $1 million outlay is now coming in much lower because of a change in the project planning and division of labor.

Curb and gutter work and paving on Eunice Drive in Newcastle is about to get underway.

Mayor Karl Nail said when the City originally put the bid together on the project, it was close to $1 million.

“We decided we needed to find a different way to do this porject,” Nail said. “By the City doing some work and then bidding out some of it, it will be significantly less.”

Nail said the City felt like they could get savings and it appears to be turning out much better than had they accepted the previous bids.

“It’s looking good so far,” Nail said.

The City had a company come in and install underground drainage, and then the City did the roadwork to prepare for curb and gutter and then asphalt. Nail said the rain had delayed some of the road stabilization.

The city council accepted the low bid on curb and gutter work by SWH Construction. They came in at $265,987. Other bids came from: Ellsworth Construction at $386,087.30; First Water Contracting LLC, $354,434; Rudy Construction, $331,400; and Connelly Paving, $296,926.
